Required Reading for Moms and Mom-To-Be's
Now
that Aggie knows you can't run after with toddler in heels, and
Nely has learned that a missed naptime will not bring the end of
humankind, they have prepared a list of books they'd recommend
to the woman who day dreams about motherhood.
Hint: it's not for the faint of heart!
Aggie's List
::: The
Three Martini Playdate by Christie Mellor – When
I read the part where the author suggests training kids to serve
drinks at parties, I knew she and I were kindred spirits. Okay,
so I won't have my eight year-old bartending parties, but I know
that there has to be some give and take.
::: MotheringHeights.com –I
imagined motherhood would be all snuggles and quiet evenings reading
the kid to sleep, and then gentle love-making with my husband on
our freshly laundered sheets. But then I spent six weeks – SIX -
with Audrey. My illusions were shattered but this blog reminds
me that at least I won't be alone.
::: Como
Te Llamas, Baby: The Hispanic Baby Name Book by
Jamie Martinez Wood – If, and that's a really big
if, I have kids, I'd like to give them a really
cool Hispanic name. Okay, I know you're thinking that Aggie isn't
a very Mexican but my real name is Agatha, which means virtuous.
Shut up. Anyway, what do you think about Itzel for a girl?
Nely's List
::: The
Happiest Baby On The Block by Dr. Harvey Karp, M.D. – A
happy baby means a happy mama and this book is like the Art of
War for newborns. When Simon and I were taking classes, we watched
videos of Dr. quieting colicky babies. His technique was like magic
and sure enough, when Audrey arrived, the five S's soothed her
into a peaceful sleep.
::: Carmen
Electra's Strip to Fit – Who has time to read,
much less get in the car to drive to the gym for a workout? Look
at my waistline, two years after Audrey's birth and that'll be
your answer! I tried yoga and it put me to sleep. Pilates brought
me to tears. But after one session with this video – also
you can see that Carmen is having a hard time, too! - I swear my
butt got smaller. When I wanted to have sex with my husband again,
you better believe he gave me time to work out!
::: Momma
Zen: Walking the Crooked Path of Motherhood by
Karen Maezen Miller – There are so many people out there – in
my case, she happens to live next door – who impose their
standards of motherhood on you, even when you're just minding your
own business at the grocery store. The fact is, there never has
been, nor will there ever be the perfect mom. This book allowed
me to accept that and just be the mom I'm meant to be.
